Get Your Brantford/Brant County Home Ready for Summer

Can you believe it’s already June? Memorial Day marked the unofficial start of summer and now it’s time to start preparing your home for the warm months ahead. With favorable weather on the way, there’s plenty of outdoor and indoor maintenance to think about, from cleaning your gutters to switching your ceiling fan blades, sharpening your lawn mower blades and more. While Brantford/Brant County Real Estate is my forte, I also love offering advice about home improvement. From your trusted Brantford/Brant County Real Estate Agent, here are a few tips to keep your Brantford/Brant County Home looking fresh all summer long!

Clean Your Gutters: After months of being unattended to, now is the time to take advantage of the dryer weather and clean out your gutters. Get rid of leaves, needles and debris to leave your gutters free to carry rainwater away and thus protect your home from rot and mold. While summer is a more favorable time to do this due to weather, you should actually clean you gutters several times a year to ensure they are in tip-top shape all year long. To get the job done, hire a professional or save some money and do it yourself! All you need is a stable ladder, gloves and a hand towel – but be careful!

Have a Garage Sale: Who doesn’t love a garage sale? This is a great way to prepare your Brantford/Brant County Home for summer. Not only will you get a chance to mingle with friends and neighbors, but you will also have an excuse to clean out your garage and make some money to boot! My advice? Have the garage sale sooner rather than later. Right now we are still seeing some cooler weather, but in a month or two, it won’t be as fun to sit outside in the hot, hot heat!

Sharpen Blades: Experts say that keeping your lawn mower blades sharpened promotes a healthier lawn. Lawns cut with sharp blades will also need less watering, saving you money on water and energy costs. Most of us mow our lawns one to two times a week, so that means your blades should be sharpened at least once a year. Not sure if your mower is in need of a sharpening? No problem. Next time you are mowing your lawn, examine the cut of the grass. If the grass blades are ragged, then it’s time to sharpen your blades.

Windows: We don’t want to run the air conditioning constantly, right? With that in mind, make sure your windows and screens are intact so you can enjoy the fresh, summer breezes. Replace any screens that are ripped or torn and make sure your windows open and lock securely. When the weather is moderate with mild humidity, this is the time to open your windows and let them do the cooling. This will cut your cooling costs and let you enjoy more summer’s fresh air.

Last but not least, don’t forget to have fun! With your home looking so great, you’ll definitely want to celebrate with family and friends. Do plenty of outdoor cooking and spend as much time as you can outdoors. This weather only lasts a few months out the year so embrace it!

I hope these “summerizing” tips have given you some ideas on how to spruce up your home for the upcoming season. The official start of summer is June 20th – so get started!
